What is Ashtanga yoga?

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic practice, which synchronises movement and breath to create a calm, steady mind whilst aligning and strengthening the body.  Yoga practice is a process of broadening attention and being comfortable with what is here and now.   You don't need to be able to touch your toes to come to class!  All that is required is a willingness to learn and accept that the only place to begin is where you are.

What is a Mysore - Style class?

The Mysore style method is a very effective way for beginners to learn Ashtanga yoga and for seasoned practitioner to continue their practice. Please note that these are not 1.5hr classes! In a Mysore class the teacher works with each student individually, allowing the student to move at his/her own pace. Small segments of the practice are taught to aid memorisation and familiarity. Students practice independently in a Mysore class with the teacher guiding them and giving adjustments as necessary. Initially, beginning students can expect their practice to be 20 - 30min long, this slowly builds over time. Another bonus is that you don't need be here at 6am, you can come in at a time that suits you, as long as you finish your practice by 8am. The class is called “Mysore - style” because Shri K. Pattabhi Jois taught Ashtanga yoga in this manner from his home town, Mysore, South India for over 70 years. His grandson Sharath continues to teach the Mysore - style method in Mysuru today. Please visit his website for further information. Karyn is a direct student of Shri K. Pattabhi Jois and Sharathji.

Consistency is important! So is patience. Everyone can learn yoga, all that’s required is curiosity and a willingness to learn.
